Since 2022, Asian Justice Movement has been organizing events to commemorate the tragedy of March
16, 2021 tragedy, in which Robert Aaron Long, entered two spas and a
massage parlor in Atlanta, and took the lives of eight people - Delaina
Ashley Yaun Gonzalez, Xiaojie Tan, Daoyou Feng, Paul Andre Michels, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, Soon Chung Park, and Yong Ae Yue. From
March 15 to March 16, there will be events held in Atlanta and San
Francisco. On Sunday, March 15th, CAPA will be joining in, by hosting a
prayer walk through Koreatown (Manhattan). It will be a time to walk together, reflect, and listen to a reading of Tanya Ko Hong's poem, "Bleeding Heart Flower." The following is what the walk will look like: We will meet at the plaza at 32nd St. and Broadway, no later than 12:00pm (ideally). At
12:00pm, we will leave for Church of Saint Francis of Assisi on 32nd St., where one of the pastors there, will give his blessing for the
walk. Afterwards, we will
walk along one side of 32nd St. in Koreatown. All walkers will carry a
flower. Some may give out flowers to the public and a poem about a
mother who lost her life during the shooting in Atlanta. The poem was
dedicated to her surviving children. The poem was beautifully written by
CAPA's Tanya Ko Hong. We
will walk to Marble Collegiate Church. There we will stand outside the
church and have one person read Tanya's poem in English. Another person
will read it in Korean. If time, group will be asked if they have any
thoughts they'd like to share. At
some point, we would like to have someone announce the names of those
who lost their lives in Atlanta. We would also like to have a moment of
silence. We would also like to to use a singing bowl and chime it three
times. We will then head
back to Koreatown and walk on the other side of 32nd St. Tentatively,
we will walk back to the plaza, where another poem will be read. This
poem was read at one of the previous events dedicated to Atlanta
shootings. Following this, the walk will end. People may be asked to
share their thoughts about the walk. All will be given tea lights, to
remember the walk. After the walk, we will ask if anyone would like to have coffee or tea at Tous Les Jours bakery. For more information or if you would like to volunteer at the event, please contact Nancy Wong and Ginny Myung.
